1980s-1990s art to wear rag fringe plaid cotton pullover sweater by multimedia California/New York artist, Paula Sweet.  Paula Sweet coined this scrap fabric technique "muslin mink" ~ an artistic alternative to fur.  She was using this technique since the 1960s.  A scrappy designer after our own heart!  You can find her current offerings and archives .

"Many years ago a mink coat was an exclusive item that I could not afford. I designed Muslin MinkTM so that everyone could have a mink: man, woman, rich, poor - even children. It was important that the coat be washable, and not made of animal fur. I first crafted them from muslin, the most common, readily available cotton. Eventually I designed them in velvets, denim, wool, silks, lace, flannel, and sheer mousseline de soie. I always insisted on an affordable price structure to keep them accessible. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC has a three-quarter length Muslin MinkTM in the Permanent Collection." -Paula Sweet
